About the podcast

So, who is the Urban Mystic podcast for? It’s a question we get asked a lot. Is it for pastors? Is it for agnostics? Is it for people who are angry at the church?

The honest answer is: it’s for anyone who is hungry for something more than the status quo. Specifically, we designed this space for those of you who might call yourselves 'post-religious' or 'spiritual but not religious.' Maybe you’ve left the church building, but you haven't left God. In fact, you left because you wanted to find God.

In our conversations—hosted by myself, Tim, and Steve—we create a space where deconstruction isn't a bad word. It’s a necessary step. We talk about the things you aren't 'supposed' to talk about. We question the institutional paradigms that keep us busy but empty.

But we don’t just tear things down. We are deeply interested in reconstruction. We explore what it looks like to rebuild a spiritual life on the foundation of relationship. We talk to theologians, philosophers, and everyday mystics about their real experiences.

If you are tired of the polished answers and are looking for vulnerable, authentic conversation about what it means to walk with God in the real world, this podcast is for you. Tune in to Season One if you want to start with the foundations, or jump into our latest season where we dive deep into the lives of the great mystics. We’re glad you’re listening

The Urban Mystic Podcast is your guide through the shifting landscapes of faith, relationship, and presence. Across six seasons, we move from critically examining traditional paradigms to actively exploring the depths of experiential, Relational Spirituality. Each season builds on the last, offering resources for those deconstructing their faith, seeking genuine intimacy with God, and building organic community.

Podcast Seasons

2025
Season Six: Mystics and Modern Spirituality

Season Six continues our rich exploration of Relational Spirituality as we move toward engaging the ancient Christian mystics. We recognize that while modern Christian spirituality draws on these figures, their primary focus is often on the practices rather than on the relational presence of God—a distinction we aim to explore and correct.

Season Five: Defining Relational Spirituality

In our fifth season, we begin to truly find our own voice and take our first significant steps into the in-depth exploration of Relational Spirituality. This season marks a crucial pivot from critique and deconstruction toward active, constructive spiritual discovery.

Season Four: A Theological Tangent

In our fourth, mini-season, we took a deep theological tangent. We explored Open and Relational Theology with prominent thinkers like Thomas Jay Oord and others who share this theological foundation, providing intellectual support for the relational focus of our mission.

Season Three: Vision and Values

Welcome to Season 3. In this pivotal season, Tim and Steve clarify the vision of the Urban Mystic and articulate the core value of intimacy with God. We look to a future paradigm not based on 'doing church,' but on the consistent practice of the relational presence of God as the foundation for community.

Season Two: The Diversity of Deconstruction

Season Two is centered around candid conversations with multiple guests regarding the journey of deconstructing their faith. Through these diverse stories, we observe natural categories emerging within 'deconstruction' as an umbrella term, offering listeners shared insights and validation for their own process.

Season One: Distinguishing Faith and Experience

In our foundational first season, we lay the groundwork by clearly distinguishing religion, spirituality, and mysticism. We dive into a focused critique of institutional Christianity and the traditional church model, opening the urgent question of pursuing an experiential relationship with God for those who find themselves post-religious.

Q&A

This podcast is primarily for those seeking a close, intimate, and experiential relationship with God—especially those who define themselves as post-religious, spiritual but not religious, church leavers, or people actively deconstructing their faith. We move beyond distant belief into active presence.

Track One is dedicated to the philosophical and spiritual journey, offering a deep exploration of faith, relationship with God, and the concepts of Relational Spirituality. Track Two is more practical, providing support, guidance, and tools specifically for individuals who are developing organic communities around the Practice of the Presence of God.

Yes, absolutely. While we critically examine institutional paradigms, the core of our content—intimacy with God and the Practice of the Presence—is vital for anyone, regardless of their current spiritual affiliation. If you are seeking a deeper, more personal experience of God, you will find immense value here.

Our perspective is rooted in Relational Spirituality, emphasizing God's presence and active relationship. We engage various theological frameworks, including Open and Relational Theology (as explored in Season 4), but the focus remains on the experiential and relational core that moves beyond mere doctrine.

Yes. Our earlier seasons provide the essential context and critique (deconstruction, distinguishing religion from spirituality) that led to our current focus on Relational Spirituality (Seasons 5 and 6). Starting from Season 1 gives you the full journey, but if you want to jump straight to the practical development, Seasons 5 and 6 are great entry points.
